參演團體介紹
78bpm 78 bmp was already attracting much attention in Taiwan’s independent electronic music circle when their 2002 album “Red Moon” was named by MCB, the Hong Kong music magazine as one of the Top 20 Albums of the Year by Chinese Artists. Widespread acclaim soon followed in the entire Greater China area. On the album, the underlying abstract hip hop/breakbeat structure is topped gradually by acoustic pipa, di (Chinese flute), trumpet, guitar sounds and vocal rhymes; the whole thing is then processed to present subtle but interesting flows of melody in minimalist cycles, creating a kind of dark warmth. In the two years since, 78bpm has changed lineup as well as direction, from downtempo to a richer more varied indietronica with the help of Wanting, one of the most respected guitarists in Taiwan’s underground rock scene (previously a member of Tin Pan Alley, VARO and Ladybug).
Four Tet With its elegantly merged folk leanings and electronica rhythms, “Rounds” successively swept most of the Album of the Year honors around the musical world in 2003, quickly raising Four Tet’s profile to on a par with groups like Boards of Canada and Manitoba! Four Tet is Kieran Hebden, a musician/producer from the UK and ex-bassist with the post rock band Fridge. His eclectic blend of post rock, free jazz and sample-based styles under the new alias drew the attention of many big names in music, with the likes of Kings of Convenience, Badly Drawn Boy, Radiohead, Aphex Twin, Beth Orton, The Notwist, Blue States and Doves all asking him for remixes. The live performance of this “most intelligent of electronica poets in the IDM world” is highly expected to be full of charisma!
MP(Madall
Pumpkin) Known as MP, the band consists of guitarist Tino, drummer Jota, bassist Summer and lead singer Ba-Keung. Considered one of the emerging local bands with the greatest potential, MP came second in the inaugural All-Macau Teen Band Competition in 2003, with Ba-Keung winning the award for best lead singer and best original lyrics. MP has shown great courage in staying true to the creative spirit while attempting a variety of styles to reflect their surroundings through music and representing the fantasy world of their imaginations.
Dylan Art Dylan Art was formed in 1999 by Hayes (vocals/programming) and Moonbyrd (programming/guitar), who was previously a member of The Postcard. Although Moonbyrd had the intention of becoming a full-time music critic after The Postcard disbanded, he was so taken by Hayes’ wonderful singing voice that they decided immediately to work together. Hayes had no formal musical experience but is skilled at creating beautiful and delicate melodies, and her ethereal freeform vocal delivery without the restriction of lyrics soon became the easily identifiable sound of Dylan Art. Major influences on the group include Bjork, Stina Nordenstam, Kings of Convenience and Broadcast. Having participated on several compilation albums in Hong Kong, Japan and Australia, Dylan Art is currently working on their debut album with producers Jason Choi and Square Fruit.
Sulumi Hailing from Anshan, Liaoning, Sulumi (aka Sun Dawei) is the key representative name in Chinese electronica. While studying at the Shen Yang Conservatory of Music, Sun formed and participated in several bands, including Straw, Good Quality of Soya Bean, and Underground Baby before turning to electronic music. He co-composed the score to a play by Meng Jinghui with Feng Jiangzhou in July 2002, later releasing his first album in November, titled “Air Inhibition of Water.” In December of the same year he founded the electronica label Landscape Record, which brought out its debut release, the compilation “Landscape” in 2003. Sun’s participation on the album “A/D.target” was under the alias Sulumi, though had he previously recorded “Changing the Dynasty” with the codename Panda Twin for the compilation “Yellow Peril” released in August 2003. Sun was invited to perform at Sounding Beijing 2003 – International Electronic Music Festival.
Piana Piana is the solo project of Naoko Sasaki. Born in 1976 in Morioka, Japan, Sasaki first ventured into the music world in 1998, forming Card Skepper with Yuichiro Iwashita, the guitarist of Minamo. In 2003 she released her first solo album “Snow Bird,” taking care of everything from writing to production. Delivered by Piana’s sweet but fragile voice, these reflective monologues of the female psyche are instantly memorable, while her deftly-created electronic sounds flutter like butterflies, at times overlapping, echoing or interrupting the melodies. Piana may look like a teenage pop idol, but her music is a breath of cool fresh air that blows away all possible clichés.
World’s End Girlfriend A much lauded electronica artist both at home in Japan or abroad, World’s End Girlfriend (WEG) released his debut album under Yoshihiro Hanno’s label Current in 2000, which was snapped up by UK’s Third Ear. In 2002, he was invited to perform at Sonar, the music festival in Barcelona. WEG showed his musical talents early, creating music with guitar, piano and a tape recorder – by the age of 12, he had already composed 600 pieces! Unlike the kidult spirit represented by other “trendy” Japanese artists such as Takagi Masakatsu or Nobukazu Takemura, WEG’s music expresses a strong sense of tragic romanticism, combining in an almost schizophrenic manner elegant quietude with crazy explosiveness, not unlike film scores in its vivid visual qualities. One is taken aback by the depth and richness of emotions in someone so young, though perhaps not in one so talented. He recently released an album entitled “Enchanted Landscape Escape” under the alias Wonderland Falling Yesterday, showing the reflective and subtler side of his musical character.
